The Department of Community Health is well poised to remain a centre of excellence in the training of undergraduate and postgraduate students in contemporary Public Health practice. The Department is endowed with a growing team of experienced and very competent academic and non-academic staff to ensure that she is well positioned to fulfil her mandate of ensuring sound theoretical and field/practical public health training of her students.
The Department has expanded and continues to combine teaching, research and training programmes within the set out Departmental objectives for undergraduate and postgraduate training in addition to rendering Consultancy services. The overall objective of the Department is to prepare trainees for various careers in Public Health including developing human resources with high-level technical skills and competence to provide and lead integrated preventive and promotive public health interventions.
The Department is organized in such a way that it embraces such sub-specialties as Epidemiology, Medical Statistics, Health Management & Planning, International Health, Environmental Health, Occupational Health, Health Education, Primary Health Care, Rehabilitative Medicine, Family/Reproductive Health and Medical Ethics in its training curriculum.
In the area of training the Department undertakes undergraduate training of medical students in all subspecialty of Public Health. The Department is also involved in full time and part time postgraduate training programmes viz: Master of Public Health; Master of Public Health in Reproductive & Family Health; PhD in Public Health and PhD in Reproductive & Family Health.
The above postgraduate programmes are structured to ensure that the students have a sound theoretical and practical/field exposure in Public Health practice to be well positioned to occupy and perform strategic public health roles and functions locally, nationally and internationally.
The Departments also maintains a very cordial academic and professional relationship with other Departments within and outside the College of Medical Sciences and the University Community locally, nationally and internationally.
